　　中途岛战争失利间接公布了日军在承平洋疆场上的失利，负嵎顽抗的日军仍然苦守日本最南真个小岛—硫磺岛。这个看似不起眼的小岛，却上演了二战承平洋上最惨烈的战争。                                    
                                栗林忠道中将（渡边谦 饰）是日军在硫磺岛的批示官，负责这道日军最初的防线。栗林中将大力鼎新日军内部的成规和不敷，并设想出一整套对于美军、以迟延为主的作战计划。虽然他和日军的二万名官兵都高低齐心，但面临占尽空中上风的四万名美军兵士，栗林晓得这将是一场没有归路的战争。
