　　哈林顿（查尔斯·科本 Charles Coburn 饰）和女儿简（芭芭拉·斯坦威克 Barbara Stanwyck 饰）靠行骗维生，父女两人靠着他们的聪明才干和完善无缺的配合赚得盆满钵满。某日，在一条邮轮上，两人相逢了名叫查尔斯（亨利·方达 Henry Fonda 饰）的年轻男人，查尔斯刚刚从亚马逊的热带雨林里归来，荣幸的他继续了一笔代价不菲的遗产。
　　经过一番打仗，简发现查尔斯的本性纯真，赋性善良，正是绝好的行骗工具，便决议动手。但是，随着时候的推移，查尔斯的怪异魅力渐渐传染了简，令后者没法自拔的爱上了她。但是，就在此时，查尔斯得知了简的实在身份和目标，愤慨的他决议完全的分开简。
