                                30年月初，密西西比州荒原的牢狱里，唠絮聒叨、油嘴滑舌的艾弗瑞特（乔治·克鲁尼 George Clooney 饰）成天打着各类逃窜的鬼主张。在成功压服了狱友——脑筋简单的德尔玛（蒂姆·布雷克 ·尼尔森 Tim Blake Nelson 饰）和贼大胆的皮特（约翰·特托罗 John Turturro 饰）以后，艾弗瑞特的逃狱大计终究得以实现，三个穿着监犯服、拖动手铐、脚镣的罪犯叮叮当当地踏上了通往自在之路。据艾弗瑞特说，在密西西比河滨还埋藏有一大笔赃款赃物。                                    
                                流亡途中，他们不但要对于各类百般使人辣手的突发事务，还要与追捕他们的法律官库利斗智斗勇。这个锲而不舍的家伙立誓要把这三个“脱网之鱼”送回牢狱。这一路上意外不竭，状态百出，究竟他们能否获得实在的自在？
