◎简　　介　
　　威廉•华莱士童年时，其父、苏格兰民族豪杰马索•华莱士在与英军的斗争中牺牲，他起头接管父亲好友的指导，进修苏格兰文化和武术。青韶华莱士（梅尔•吉布森）学成回到故乡，向美丽的少女梅伦求婚，不想梅伦被英军抢去且遭杀戮。在广大村民“豪杰以后”的呼声中，华莱士率众揭竿叛逆，并与苏格兰贵族罗伯结成同盟，但未几他发现，苏格兰贵族斟酌的只是本身的好处。
　　英王为缓和大势，派伊莎贝拉（苏菲•玛索）前往和华莱士谈判，由于英王只想拉拢华莱士，底子掉臂苏格兰群众的自在和同等，谈判失利，但这一切并不为伊莎贝拉所知。伊莎贝拉归国后发现工作真相，且知晓英王正策划阴招，忙送信给华莱士，而两人的恋爱，也在战争与诡计中悄悄滋生。

◎幕后揭秘
　　按照真人真事改编，但对史料做了很多修改。影片中有炽烈的爱和惨烈的死。这是一部极端暴力的影片，有大量惨绝人寰的杀人排场。但由于情节的需要、人物感情的原始性及处置的艺术化，一切都蒙上了一层史诗的美感。影片有多处使人难忘的抒怀飞腾：男仆人公在山顶高声疾呼时，摄影机在山峦中绕着仆人公盘旋。另一个气冲牛斗的排场是仆人公号使群众起来为自在抗争。梅尔·吉布森的古打扮相很是都雅，不但扬敦促马时异常威武，情话绵绵时也使民气动。没有几个好莱坞明星能身穿苏格兰裙而又连结男人气概的。影片获第68届奥斯卡最好影片、最好导演等5项大奖，霍纳的音乐也很出色。
