　　“毕德曼慧星”正朝着地球飞奔而来，给人类致命一击。政府告急行动，研讨出一个最好计划——由宇航员坦纳（罗伯特·杜瓦尔 Robert Duvall饰）驾驶“弥赛号”飞船飞往慧星，把预先预备好的核弹放置到慧星上面引爆，以令它化成碎片或是改变轨道。坦纳勇敢地完成了使命，却发现并没有获得预期结果。慧星碎成了一大一小两部分，向地球步步逼近。
　　政府敏捷采纳最初的行动，用“诺亚方舟”计划保住包括人类在内的一些地球物种。这是一个奥秘的地下庇护所，只要少数的人可以在这里避开大灾难，等灾难散尽前方重建天下。较小的那部分慧星已经撞向地球，激发山崩地裂，一片天下末日的气象。而跟从厥后的大慧星给地球带来的扑灭水平，将远远超乎人们设想，力挽狂澜的人类进入了倒数时辰。

　　《六合大冲撞》是一部根植于现实的科幻片，由于地球确切已经蒙受过彗星和小行星的频频撞击。为了普遍研讨近地小行星和彗星、统计测算出人类在撞击中的灭亡机率，美国宇航局的喷气推动尝试室和美国空军联手展开了近地小行星跟踪计划（NEAT），研讨成果表白，大致积小行星要末会让华盛顿巨细的地区毁于一旦，要末会形成灭绝级事务（E.L.E），即物种的大量消亡和全球天气的持久改变，假如它击中陆地，那末海啸足以沉没地球上的大部分陆地。70年月，诺贝尔奖获得者路易斯·阿尔瓦雷兹（Luis Alvarez）和他的儿子沃尔特·阿尔瓦雷兹（Walter Alvarez）公布了一项惊人的发现，那就是他们在构成于6500万年前的陈腐岩石中发现了散布在天下各地的一层稀有元素，而恐龙等数百个物种正灭绝于同一期间，两人由此揣度出地球曾被来自太空的物体击中，该物体也许是一颗彗星，撞击能力相当于数百万枚核弹，构成的陨石坑直径跨越100英里，数十亿吨灰尘和水汽被抛入大气层，地球四周随即出现了遮挡阳光数月或数年之久的云团，大大都生物逐步消亡，只要少少数生物得以幸存下来。现在，很多科学家都相信地球曾履历过屡次这类浩劫，虽说数万万或数亿年才能够发生一次，但却完全不成猜测。
　　作为《大白鲨》、《大白鲨2》、《横冲直撞大流亡》、《大审判》，《茧》和《魔茧续集》的建造人，理查德·D·扎努克和大卫·布朗一向对《六合大冲撞》中人类面临天下末日的故事偏心有加。编剧迈克尔·托尔金说：“《六合大冲撞》有关全天下对末日的反应，我们聚焦于少数特别人群的生活，从而将庞大的灾难引入小我层面。”监制琼·布拉德肖说：“不管你是一位年轻的职场女性，还是身担重任的宇航员，或是才刚刚起头贯通的生活的懵懂少年，都要面临一个终极题目，那就是怎样度过灾难前的余生。”在片中饰演职场女性珍妮的蒂娅·里欧妮说：“假如我晓得自己只能再活两天，我能够会从楼顶跳下体验飞的感受，可假如还有两年，你会在这希奇的刻日中做些什么？”
　　本片导演咪咪·莱德曾凭电视剧《急诊室的故事》两次摘得艾美奖，而本片正是她继《战争缔造者》以后执导的第二部长片。“这个故事之所以会吸引我，”莱德说，“是由于我们在面临灭绝的恶运时必须作出的挑选。人们会堕入惊骇、放弃工作和苦守婚姻吗？他们又该怎样拯救他们的孩子？本片不但有关殊效和灾难，还展现出当面临没顶之灾时我们会做些什么，片中人物作出了多种多样的挑选，希望有人能因本片而重新评价自己的人生和挑选。”
　　本片于1997年6月16日开拍，剧组首先在弗吉尼亚州马纳萨斯的一段刚刚完工但尚未开通的高速公路上拍摄了美国东海岸居民疯狂逃离彗星撞击点的紊乱场景，有2100名姑且演员和1870台各类车辆介入拍摄，全部堵车现场连绵1.5英里。值得一提的是，为辅佐剧组拍摄，弗吉尼亚的乔治城和阿灵顿史无前例的初次答应在星期天封闭弗朗西斯·斯科特·基大桥，由于两座城市的政府和电影部分赐与了大力支持，并提早奉告公众大桥的封闭时候，所以拍摄现场井井有理，而蜂拥而至期待报道紊乱排场的媒体记者也只好失望而归。
