悲悼・市川崑。市川崑が渡世に生きる3人の若者をみずみずしく描いた傑作。
従来の格好いい股旅もののイメージを革新して、大师・市川崑が渡众人の作法を丁寧に描写しながら、 怪异のオフビート感覚で等身大の青春を鮮やかに描いた股旅青春映画。
ある農村の侠客の軒先で、訛り丸出しで仁義を切る、みすぼらしい姿の3人の若者。
源太、信太、黙太郎である。
いずれも農家の食いつめ者で渡世の天下に入ったばかりの新参者たちだったが、世間の風は彼らが思うほど暖かくはない。
へっぴり腰で切る仁義、しみったれた賭場荒らし、やむにやまれぬ渡世の義理。
社会から落ちこぼれて厳しい渡世を右往左往する若者像は、現代の若者にも通じる姿として、みっともなさが痛切に胸にしみる。
